THE HORROR ADVOCATE
[POP] CULT SURVIVALIST
1978-1991
17 victims all fell prey to one man
On November 28, 1994, the notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was murdered while serving a life sentence for the murder and dismemberment of fifteen men and boys between 1978 and 1992, primarily Black American men. The recent release of Netflix's unflinching portrayal of this American serial killer is causing a significant impact on our culture.
The response to the Netflix miniseries is a painful reminder that the environment in which Dahmer gained power and was shielded from capture is still being nurtured today. We can search ourselves for why, but the more significant concern is how. What role did the rest of us play in aiding this?

Family and Friends of the victims react to the verdict (1992).
Following the indictment on 15 murder charges, Dahmer's trial commenced on January 30, 1992. The proceedings lasted two weeks, culminating in Dahmer receiving 15 life terms, ensuring justice prevailed.
The rise of crime as a pop culture phenomenon existed long before the late 1970s, but it was exclusively associated with radio, newspapers, and other forms of media coverage.
It's a moral soapbox with many holes. Furthermore, it plays into our delusion that ignoring violence will make it go away and that any consumption of or attention paid to violence as part of our society has an underlying motivation and penchant for witnessing suffering. This is where the lines get blurry.
“Those who didn't live through it should also not talk about it" - that's a level of rationalization that continues to elude me. It asserts that if you're present during a major social, political, or cultural event, you're somehow immune to being corrected or enlightened.
We all understand that knowledge is power, and any deliberate attempt to conceal it should be considered an act of violence. The less you know, the less you confront the darkness, and the less you acknowledge that it is an ongoing battle that we all must engage in. Burying Dahmer’s acts of violence between 1978-1991 implies that there is no lasting impact, transformation, or mark left behind.
We would like to think that the violence departed from this world when he did, and we fear that discussing it is akin to performing a spell, unearthing the grave of a complicit society that facilitated and supported this nightmare at the expense of their morals and creative pursuits.

The phenomenon of true crime, as we understand it today, gained traction by providing a way for society to confront America's most infamous criminals.
The Pamela Smart murder trial was the first-ever televised murder trial in us history. Here we begin to see threads of what we now know as the 24-hour news cycle. It's also the dawn of the armchair arm detective.
+The Ted Bundy trial introduced us to a CANONICAL understanding of a media circus.
PROJECT INTRODUCTION:
Dahmer: THE WEAPON YOU WIELD IN HONOR OF TRADITION
They believe that most of Dahmer's victims were black men who were struggling to fit into a world that seeks to push them out and use their pain as source material for cautionary tales. To cover up their pain and loss by pretending that your desire for their invisibility is a form of respect. They say, 'Don't speak ill of the dead,' as if portraying an accurate picture is a betrayal.
We embrace humanity, kindness, knowledge, understanding, and good intentions. However, these cultural perspectives can sometimes allow predators to harm others without facing consequences. Ignoring violence won't make it disappear, and accepting it as a part of life won't make you a bad person. The idea that talking about darkness is the problem shows our tendency to forgive those who cause harm instead of supporting those who are hurt. This belief confuses people into thinking that they are inevitably part of the cycle of violence. It's easier to believe that bad things only happen to other people somewhere else and will never come to your doorstep.
It is the intense conflict we engage in with one another. We desire a world shaped by the contradictory nature of individualist culture alongside the belief that certain places, experiences, and ways of living lead people to their deaths. On one hand, we believe everyone is responsible for themselves; on the other hand, we give up our innocence. We disregard the lived experiences of marginalized groups in favor of the bootstrap theory, all the while offering only thoughts and prayers as if they are solutions.
'On May 27, neighbors called the police to report seeing a naked and bleeding boy run from Mr. Dahmer's apartment building. After interviewing Mr. Dahmer, Officer Gabrish and two fellow officers accepted his explanation that the youth was an adult and his lover and that the boy was drunk. The officers went with Mr. Dahmer and the boy to Mr. Dahmer's apartment. The other officers were also suspended. The incident Led to Protests.
After Mr. Dahmer was arrested in July, he told the police that he strangled the boy, Konerak Sinthasomphone, soon after the officers left. Mr. Dahmer's neighbors have maintained that the officers did not remove the Laotian boy because of racial tension and cultural inequities.

When it comes to the victims, the line between exploitation and open visibility becomes increasingly defined by the world we think we live in. When we retreat in the face of horror, evil, and violence, we create a world in ruins. We codify individualism and cradle our cruelty with reckless abandon. We perform care through judgment and punishment at will.
We are responsible for witnessing others' pain and don't get to look away.
If we don't talk about them, who will? They died because we willed it. After all, we bastardized their life choices. After all, we cling to tradition like the last hope and devour anyone who comes to challenge it. We distorted their life choices, clinging to tradition as our last hope and rejecting anyone challenging it.

Violence is not pleasant, and no justification or mitigation changes its properties. If someone doesn’t say these names, if someone doesn’t write it down if someone doesn’t continue to push them in the face of society, Then they die for nothing, and the pattern will repeat.
Toxic identity culture is powerful and captivating; it masquerades self-preservation and personal protection as secrecy, dishonesty, and inauthenticity. The lgbt+ community has been intentionally terrorized for decades (most of that time, they were oppressed with immunity] and for the sake of 'appearances' (don't ask, don't tell). They demand you wear a mask and then call you deceitful when you don't expose yourself to them and say you have a chip on your shoulder ...that it's easy to come out now. They ask you not to shove your identity down their throat and then put their son in a ladies' man onesie. Engaging in this level of hypocrisy is not only exhausting, but it's also misleading and void of humanity.

KILLER DETAILS
The Visionary - Usually psychotic, the visionary is compelled to murder because they hear voices or see visions ordering them to kill certain kinds of people.
Mission-Oriented - Targets a specific group of people who they believe are unworthy of living and without whom the world would be a better place.
Hedonistic Killer - Kills for the thrill of it because they enjoy the act of killing and sometimes become sexually aroused during the act of murder. Jerry Brudos, the Lust Killer, fits this profile.
Power-Oriented - Kills to exert ultimate control over their victims. These murderers are not psychotic but obsessed with capturing and controlling their victims and forcing them to obey their every command. Pedro Alonso Lopez, Monster of the Andes, abducted children with the intent to hold them even after death.

The narcissistic social loop of victim blaming
THE CRIME SCENE[S]
The rise of the gay rights movement nurtured Dahmer's active years. The first gay rights organization was founded in 1950. by the time Dahmer began killing, the country was reeling from the wrath of the aids epidemic, the murder of Harvey Milk, and the backend of the sexual revolution that expressed itself as Playboy/Chippendales, Plato's Retreat, and NYC bathhouses.
Dahmer had a history of encountering law enforcement in critical moments. For instance, when his 14-year-old victim escaped into a nearby alley, Dahmer was able to use the cultural anonymity of the gay club scene to divert suspicion. Officers were prone to believe that the boy was 19 and in a 'lovers' spat. Dahmer targeted people, places, and things that were considered disposable. This explains how the timeline of his crimes went undetected. Meanwhile, Ted Bundy was arrested, tried, and convicted during the height of Dahmer's crimes. Bundy's victims were predominantly heterosexual, white, and female. Dahmer knew that there would be little concern for a gay man or boy of color who was last seen going to or coming from a gay bar or club. Society supported the idea that being gay and engaging in sexual contact is inherently dangerous, which led to an oppressive, restrictive, and violent response, causing many individuals to disappear into the darkness.
DENY WHAT YOU CANT ADMIT
The officers who returned the 14-year-old victim to Dahmer were later suspended. During the trial proceedings, one of them was quoted saying they didn't just hand him over, and there were no red flags or signs of stress.
The witnesses who called to report a possible crime said the boy was naked and bloody. We have to ask ourselves what cultural influences and biases allowed these officers to assume there was no danger reasonably.
This response has several layers, including gender, sex, neighborhood, ethnicity, and misogyny. It becomes even more troubling when you consider that accepting this story would require assuming violence is an inherent part of non-heterosexual sexual encounters. This is a perfect example of how cultural beliefs can defy logic and sensibility.
There is a contradiction between the anti-queer beliefs present in American culture and the communities affected by these murders. We need to acknowledge that we have created an environment where perpetrators can easily blend in and commit crimes without consequences. If we had a culture and values system that didn't support secrecy and anonymity, committing these crimes wouldn't have been as easy. Once again, these crimes happened because we allowed them to.

Corll, Dean 1970-1973/ Killed in a shootout with police/also known as "The Candy Man or The Pied Piper"; preyed on AT LEAST 28 young men and boys in Houston, TX.
THE POT AND THE KETTLE: PORTRAITS OF SEXUALITY AS REVOLITION
Between 1978 and 1991, the second phase of the sexual revolution swept across America. Nearly 20 years earlier, the country had grappled with repressed desires. This underground movement became impossible for the culture to ignore. "American Horror Story" depicts this suppressed reaction to the stifling of our natural instincts. In "AHS: Freak Show," Murphy delves into repressed sexuality by reimagining the 1950s and early 1960s Tupperware parties.
NOW YOU SEE ME: SEX AS REVOLUTION
Resistance to racial discrimination at gay nightlife venues in the 1970s through 1990s depicted black liberation through music, dance, and collective celebration, showcasing the power of community and representation.
When Chippendales was founded in 1979, we endured a major cultural shift in how women's sexual desires are nurtured and how they are designed beyond another person's pleasure or a 'greater' purpose. At the same time, this is a moment for women. It also allowed men to exist on a spectrum of masculinity. Overall, this moment suggests women can be as sexually aroused and as sexually free without the constraints of sexual desires being explicitly tied to all that is exterior.
ATTACK OF THE MAN WITH A PLAN: THE REVOLUTIONARY SEPARATION OF SEX AND LOVE
In 1977, Larry Levenson founded an empire based on his proclivities. Plato's Retreat was not just a swingers club; it represented a new world order where sex, love, and marriage coexisted independently. In addition to promoting sexual freedom, Plato also removed the shame associated with desire. Community became a powerful aspect of sexual freedom at Plato's Retreat, drawing inspiration from the NYC bathhouses and the influential queer community.
SHE WAS SOMEONE: WEAPONIZING THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION
Dorothy Stratten became famous as Playmate of the Year in 1980. In this photo, she is pictured with her abductor, rapist, and controlling husband, who ultimately took her life. Her life and tragic death shed light on the ways in which rape culture is created, sustained, and perpetuated, especially at the expense of vulnerable women, children, and men trying to find their place in a chaotic world. Dorothy was only 17 years old when Paul Snider noticed her working at Dairy Queen in Vancouver, Canada.
At the time, snider was a pimp, a promoter, and a wannabe star—trafficking in young vulnerable girls. After seeing an advertisement for Playboy's 25th-anniversary playmate search in 1978, Paul convinced her to pose for photos. He then submitted them, and soon, after receiving word, they wanted Dorothy to come to California for a test shoot. Because Dorothy was underage, she needed her mother to permit her to leave the country; she refused, so Snyder forged the signature -- essentially kidnapping, selling, and eventually murdering Dorothy before her 21st birthday. Hustler magazine took this story and used it to advertise. After Stratten was murdered, they ran an ad that featured the crime scene layout with the caption ' what sort of a man reads Playboy." It's a stark portrait teaching us how vulnerable cultural movements, under the guise of sexual freedom, can swallow up populations.
On April 7, 1987, Chippendales choreographer and Emmy Award-winning producer Nick De Noia were sitting in his Manhattan office when a man posing as a messenger walked in. He pulled out a large caliber pistol and shot De Noia in the face, killing him.
WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT/ VIOLENT IMAGERY. PROCEED WITH CAUTION
Greed, jealousy, and anger characterize this cultural moment. It is evident that we have not only detached sex, love, and marriage from each other, but we have also removed the human connection from sexual expression. Ultimately, the pursuit of money takes precedence over our humanity, and as a result, we all suffer.
Let's not forget that these openly displayed portraits of sexuality were mainly focused on heterosexual perspectives. Imagine living in a world that disregards your safety, leaving you feeling ashamed and powerless.
So, when we talk about the causes and reasons for tragedies, we must remember our individual roles in them.
