From rumor to flesh: How candyman treats tragedy in VILLAINY
THE BACKGROUND
Apt, Horror is an innovative approach to community data gathering (+ analysis). The project sees theories transformed into meaningful conclusions, using the horror genre as a reputable source and grounding it as an applied practice for strategic community development through a 6-month curated survey designed to collect data points that reflect the needs and circumstances unique to the experiences of being underserved and undervalued. This project pulls from reality. Our daily experiences work in tandem with horror entertainment, Making real-world moments a precursor to change.
On April 29, 1992, three LA police officers were acquitted of assault charges in the near-fatal beating of Rodney King. The assault was recorded– and would be categorized today as a viral video. In October of 1992, six months after one of the most pivotal moments in American culture, Candyman delivered a carnal nightmare gift wrapped in all stages of healing, subversion, and radical confrontation.
Using Apt, Horror's project principles as a guide, this presentation will focus on assessing the film through Compassion or 'A responsibility to bear witness, Repurposing or 'Other peoples Trash, My Treasure', Subversion or 'Established does not = best,' Catharsis or 'Horror is cheaper than retail therapy,' and Perspective or 'We don't get to choose our victims'
